.

- ADD PEOPLE

I must admit, I am guilty too: writing non-fiction too dry and with too many facts and not adding real people in some way into the blog or book.  Recently I talked to a multi-book writer about it and wrote a blog post last week.  Here is an excerpt:

“We need to build page-turning non-fiction books. Thumbing through any newspaper or magazine, you will find people in almost any story: mentioning names, interviewing a person, citing people…

Native Tree Species are Under Threat

Mexico is one of the most floristically rich countries in the world.  Knowledge of its plant diversity,  geographic distribution, and human uses is still largely fragmented.  Unfortunately, deforestation is heavily impacting this country and native tree species are under threat.  To counter the forest loss, some large-scale reforestation programs have been activated in the past few decades.

.

.

Mexico has at least 2,885 native tree species (and 3,500 species according to the last updates).  And
approximately 44% are endemic to the country.  When analyzing species richness, the southern part of the country showed the highest values, with at least one peak of >400 species per 625 km2 cell in the states of Veracruz and Chiapas and values >300 species per cell in Jalisco, Oaxaca, Querétaro, and México state.

.

.

All in all, Mexico has ca. 23,000 vascular plants and is the fourth most floristically rich country in the world, after Brazil, China, and Colombia.  Despite the richness of Mexico’s flora, its inventory and mapping are still incomplete.

Fine-Quality Mexican Coffee

Mexico’s highland topography and the rich nutrients in its volcanic soils combine to create an ideal natural environment for growing fine-quality coffee beans.

Possibly the best-known Mexican coffees come from Chiapas, which is the state that produces the most.  But there is plenty to be said for Oaxaca state’s Pluma region, as well as coffees that are grown in Veracruz state’s Córdoba region.

For home consumption, a fair selection can be found at most Mexican supermarkets.  Although for a wider choice, the coffee shops that grind the beans on the premises are a good place to go.  They also tend to have more sizes of bags, so you can try out different kinds quite frequently, ordering quarter-kilos (about a half-pound), “un cuarto.”  Or find one type you always want, and buy a big bag of it.  The handful of high-end food shops, some with branch networks across the country, also stock ample ranges of high-quality Mexican coffees.

It’s probably fair to say, without being too nationalistic, that Mexico produces enough of its own good quality coffee to make paying extra for imported grains is a waste of money.

Mexican coffee production is widespread, with more than 300,000 mostly

small growers dedicated to its cultivation across 15 of Mexico’s 32 states.

Most of the coffee grown in Mexico is of the arabica kind, and more than a third is grown at high elevations which yields higher quality, and more expensive, varieties of beans.  Much of it is grown in the shade, which adds to the quality of the coffee.

AFAR

The magazine publishes a range of reported features, personal essays, opinion pieces, photo essays, illustrated features, short fiction, poetry, and shorter middle-of-book pieces. Instead of more traditional aspirational lifestyle travel stories, we tell the stories of a place and the people who live there. Their rate starts at $1/word.

.

WIRED Magazine

A publication about change—about the ways science and technology are reshaping the world and what it means to be human. While the subjects of WIRED stories run the gamut from deep dives into the biggest tech companies to Hindu extremism to digital blackface to space food to true crime, every story has technology, science, or innovation as one of its key variables. Finished pieces tend to be in the range of 1,200 to 1,800 words. Story fees now start at about $2,500 and rise from there. Other short, online-only content starts at $500 and rises with time commitment and reporting intensity.

BOOK PRE-ORDERS

Apple offers a powerful marketing feature on iBooks, and even authors who upload directly to Apple can use it.  Your book title can be posted on iBooks for pre-order — up to one year before the book launch — even if you don’t have a book cover or interior file yet.  However, it’s advisable to have the cover at least. “e-Books born as pre-orders earned the authors 3 1/2 times more income than books that were simply uploaded on the day of release.

Pre-release twelve months in advance and you have got twelve months of people discovering your book before it hits the market.  It means twelve months of additional sales in those first few days.  All you need is your metadata: the book title, author, book description, price, pre-order, and release date.  A lot more favorable than Amazon’s pre-order conditions!  Easy Upload to iBooks: Authors can distribute to iBooks on their own through a direct upload route — or through an aggregator (book distributor) such as Draft2Digital.com

WRITING FOR MAGAZINES - WORTH YOUR TIME?

Why write for magazines and newspapers?  If you write articles, you reach many more people than with books.  Your book may sell five thousand copies.  Certainly, some books turn into bestsellers, but with more than 500,000 new books per year, many books are fortunate to sell even a thousand copies.  With one article, you can reach millions of people.

Writing for magazines will give you increased confidence that you can write for publication and meet word limits and deadlines.  A fiction author recently pondered whether writing magazine articles was worth his time.  Would his time not be better spent writing for his own blog or website?  My answer was that it depends on how many subscribers and readers his website and blog had. Should your blog have less than a million readers per month, consider writing for these magazines with enormous readership numbers:

• Huffington Post: 43 million per month

• Salon: 7.7 million per month

• Travel + Leisure: 950,000 per month

• AARP The Magazine: 21,931,184

• Better Homes and Gardens: 7,624,505

If only one percent of this readership finds your article and the byline with your name, website, and book info, it’s worth it to write for these magazines.

.

Have a wonderful February and enjoy writing and making plans for new books. “Although February is short, it is filled with growing sun, lots of love, and sweet surprises”. Enjoy the many holidays this month: Groundhog Day, Super Bowl, Rosa Parks Day, Chinese New Year, Lincoln's Birthday, Valentine's Day, and Presidents' Day.

Scuba Diving in Baja California Sur

As the ultimate sports destination, La Ventana Mexico lures adventure seekers to its sandy shores with the promise of consistent offshore winds and waves. While it’s only an hour away from the bustling, tequila-fueled resort strips in Cabo San Lucas, La Ventana feels authentic–a place with dusty, bumpy roads, framed by cacti and quiet beaches in lieu of mega-resorts and buffet lines.

In La Ventana, sun seekers, mountain bikers, surfers, SUP’ers, kayakers, kiteboarders, snorkelers, divers, and anglers load up their gear and head down to play in the surf, with a stunning backdrop of the Sea of Cortez and Jacques Cousteau Island.

Baja Underwater Expeditions / Cerralvo Divers

La Ventana - Isle Cerralvo Diving

La Ventana: a kite surfing town with a small population of local fishermen and home to a gateway to Jacques Cousteau Island. The famous ocean explorer led many expeditions in this area and so the Mexican Government changed the name from Cerralvo Island in 2009 in honor of his conservation work. La Ventana: a kite surfing town with a small population of local fishermen and home to a gateway to Jacques Cousteau Island. The famous ocean explorer led many expeditions in this area and so the Mexican Government changed the name from Cerralvo Island in 2009 in honor of his conservation work. Many of the locals prefer to use its real name ‘Cerralvo’.

A huge dolphin population lives in the area too, and in the last few years, orcas encounters are becoming very popular! In one word, La Ventana is a truly magical place. Cabo Pulmo National Park

It is the national marine park on the east coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, spanning the distance between Pulmo Point and Los Frailes Cape, approximately 3 hours south of La Paz. Cabo Pulmo is home to the oldest of only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America. Estimated to be 20,000 years old, it is the northernmost coral reef in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The reef has a number of fingers of hard coral atop rock outcroppings that run parallel to the coast, occurring in progressively deeper water offshore. The area was designated a national park in 1995, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Cabo Pulmo National Park is home to over 6,000 marine species. Principle among these is the famous sea lions of the area. In terms of other large species, the park is also home to humpback whales, sharks, and whale sharks. Huge groupers, turtles, and large schools of jacks are readily available. Tropical fish are abundant, and the occasional reef and bull shark can also be found close to prey. Underwater photographers will be amazed at the diversity of macro life found on this rare coral reef.

Pulmo Ntl Park Scuba-Diving

Several coral reefs at Cabo Pulmo attract schools of rays, turtles, enormous groupers, large schools of jacks, porkfish, tropical fish, and even sharks every once in a while.

Most of the dive sites are shallow (30-40 feet) and located only a 10-15 minute boat ride from shore. The shallow depth of the dives and easy contours of the bottom, allow long and very easy drift dives.

Diving in Baja California Sur is excellent year-round but each season brings its own gems. July to November has excellent visibility (25m). This season is also prime time for whale sharks (best chances in October/November) and offers the warmest water (73-85°F/23-30°C).

Cooler waters between December and March (64-68°F/18-20°C) bring different creatures. Now is the best time to come face-to-face with humpback whales and mobula rays. Whatever time of year you visit, your logbook will be pleasantly full after diving in Baja California Sur.

Enjoy your time underwater watching the marine animals flow by.
