Glyphosate Perturbs the Gut Microbiota of Honey Bees & Mumble Bees.
Increased mortality of honey bee colonies has been attributed to several factors but is not fully understood.  The herbicide glyphosate is expected to be innocuous to animals, including bees because it targets an enzyme only found in plants and microorganisms.  Glyphosate is potentially affecting bee health and their effectiveness as pollinators.

However, bees rely on a specialized gut microbiota that benefits growth and provides defense against pathogens.  Most bee gut bacteria contain the enzyme targeted by glyphosate but vary in whether they possess susceptible versions and, correspondingly, intolerance to glyphosate.

Exposing bees to glyphosate alters the bee gut community and increases susceptibility to infection by opportunistic pathogens.  Understanding how glyphosate impacts bee gut symbionts and bee health will help elucidate a possible role of this chemical in colony decline.

Glyphosate may affect bacterial symbionts of animals living near agricultural sites, including pollinators such as bees.  The honey bee gut microbiota is dominated by eight bacterial species that promote weight gain and reduce pathogen susceptibility.  The gene encoding EPSPS is present in almost all sequenced genomes of bee gut bacteria, indicating that they are potentially susceptible to glyphosate.

Monsanto is Hiding Round-Up Weedkiller Cancer Risk

Monsanto 'bullied scientists' and hid weedkiller cancer risk, lawyer tells the court.
As ill California man’s landmark case begins, attorney attacks Roundup maker’s response to researchers’ findings.

Monsanto has long worked to “bully scientists” and suppress evidence of the cancer risks of its popular weedkiller, a lawyer argued on Monday in a landmark lawsuit against the global chemical corporation.

“Monsanto has specifically gone out of its way to bully ... and to fight independent researchers,” said the attorney Brent Wisner, who presented internal Monsanto emails that he said showed how the agrochemical company rejected critical research and expert warnings over the years while pursuing and helping to write favorable analyses of their products. “They fought science.”

Wisner, who spoke inside a crowded San Francisco courtroom, is representing DeWayne Johnson, known also as Lee, a California man whose cancer has spread through his body. The father of three and former school groundskeeper, who doctors say may have just months to live, is the first person to take Monsanto to trial over allegations that the chemical sold under the Roundup brand is linked to cancer. Thousands have made similar legal claims across the US.

Two new reports published in recent weeks add to the already large and convincing body of evidence, accumulated over more than half a century, that agricultural pesticides and other toxic chemicals are poisoning us.

Both reports issue scathing indictments of U.S. and global regulatory systems that collude with chemical companies to hide the truth from the public, while they fill their coffers with ill-gotten profits.

According to the World Health Organization, whose report focused on a range of environmental risks, the cost of a polluted environment adds up to the deaths of 1.7 million children every year.

Roundup - a Potential Carcinogen by WHO

Warning on Roundup weed killer follows low crop prices, criticism of biotech food
Agribusiness giant Monsanto Co. is confronting some of its stiffest challenges in years, as it contends with consumer criticism of biotech foods, farmers tightening their belts, and a global health agency that has labeled its trademark weed killer as a potential carcinogen.

The latest and most prominent threat came from the World Health Organization agency’s classification this month of glyphosate - which Monsanto sells under the Roundup brand - as likely having the potential to cause cancer in humans.  Read the whole story at the Wall Street Journal.

And NO, I am not feeling sorry for Monsanto. They have been lying to the public for years. In 2014 they made $5.1 BILLION REVENUE in the agricultural "productivity" segment, which includes Roundup.  I am only wondering that this poison is not banned by EVERY country in the world.

I have recently witnessed how much Roundup is used in the vineyards of the California Sonoma and Napa Valley - and guess which wine I am not drinking?  In three weeks there I found one single organic vineyard.  And in the Sacramento Valley around Chico where all the Walnuts, Almonds and Wild Rice is grown, a farmer told me that they don’t use Roundup “because it is too weak, they have better and stronger pesticides…”.
