Tables are certainly not made entirely of glass, rather, a tabletop is made from glass and is supported with a frame made from a variety of timber, metal, and in some cases even ceramics or stone.  The frame, whatever the material is, holds the glass and incorporates the legs of the dining or side table.

Scandinavian Designer Chairs

You may have seen or you even own one of these famous design chairs that were created by some of the best furniture artists during the mid-century era.  Most of them came from Scandinavia, which seems to have been a design hot-bed for many decades and even into the 21st century.  When in Denmark, find great examples at The Danish Design Centre on H. C. Andersens Boulevard opposite the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.

What is Danish Design?

Wikipedia lists all the famous designers and explains: "Danish Design is a style of functionalism and architecture that was developed in mid-20th century. Influenced by the German Bauhaus school, many Danish designers used the new industrial technologies, combined with ideas of simplicity and functionalism to design buildings, furniture and household objects, many of which have become iconic and are still in use and production. Prominent examples are the Egg Chair, the PH lamps and the Sydney Opera House.

The Egg Chair

Arne Jacobsen designed this famous world-famous chair, but he didn’t launch the design initially for commercial or residential use. His Egg Chair was intended for the new SAS hotel in Copenhagen, and he developed his design to transform the interior look of the new hotel. Jacobsen was surprised that his creation received such an enormous appreciation right from the beginning (and is until today).

Egg chairs often have been highlighted in movies, advertisements and TV or video.  They have been adopted as a status symbol and especially resorts, offices and other high class places. People consider these chairs to be the most comfortable sittings and I fully agree!

Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as an architect and as a designer. At the end of the 50s Arne Jacobsen designed the chair Lily, Series 7, Swan Chair and the Swan Sofa, the Oxford Chair and his signature design, the Egg Chair.
